At RC Cancer Centers and in my private practice, I work closely with individuals who want to achieve a healthier and more vibrant way of being. Whether you want to upgrade the quality of your life, transform a health challenge or gain strength and control through a period of transition I welcome you to that process!  I specialize in women’s issues, preventive medicine, chronic illness, stress related disorders, and lifestyle management. How It Works

Health Psychology integrates the latest findings from experts in a variety of scientific disciplines. Skill building includes valuable techniques that can restore the brain and improve immunity–as well as cardiac function–while increasing your peace of mind. Further, recent findings in neuroscience help us “heal the past in the present” and transform negative patterns into positive coping strategies. As a result, principles of Health Psychology are being taught in advanced health care centers as a primary means of preventive medicine. If you already enjoy great health, a personalized health psychology program can help you keep it. If you’re facing illness or a transition in life, such as divorce or other life change, vital discoveries from leading experts can not only boost your immunity but your creative problem solving abilities as well.

Since chronic stress can cause a multitude of health problems–from autoimmunity to bone loss and even weight gain—practical and effective stress reducing techniques yield measurable results. In addition, the way we think and feel affects every physical and metabolic function in our bodies–controlling hormone secretion and nerve activity–which either strengthen or weaken our immune system.  Taking charge of these areas can significantly improve our health and upgrade the quality of our life.

For many people, beginning a health psychology program is an important step in the process of creating a healthy and satisfying life that suits you.  I welcome you to that process!

Initial Consultation

In our initial session—whether on the phone, Skype or in person—we each decide if working together will meet your needs.  For you to receive the best possible benefit from our sessions, you should feel comfortable.  As you might imagine, a degree of ‘chemistry,’ is involved and if the fit isn’t just right, I can make a referral for you.  Likewise, if I decide my services and areas of specialization are not likely to meet your needs, I will suggest colleagues that I think would be a better match. For more information see the download below entitled “Health Questionnaire.”

Hi Brenda! I met you last night at Smyrna First! What an inspirational message you bring and, of course, I bought your book and cannot wait to start reading it! Question – my father-in-law is now with hospice from battling 10 years of prostate cancer. He is at home. Would any of this work for him? Even if just to give him a better quality of life for the time he has left with us? He is virtually paralyzed from the neck down and cannot do anything for himself…. don’t know if it is just too late for any of this to work for him but just had to ask… thank you Brenda!

  3. Brenda says:

Karen, I am so sorry for this delayed response! I only received your note this morning–not sure what happened but please don’t hesitate to call in the future. It was a pleasure speaking to your group but I am sorry to read of your father-in-law’s situation. Yes, there are ways of easing his experience and music is a valuable tool. Chapter Five will shed more light on the specifics but a selection of different types of music / sound would be helpful. Massage can also be helpful even if just for the head, neck, face and ears. Ask for a massage therapist trained to work with folks who have cancer. Audio books–you may already be using–can be of help since he can just close his eyes and not have to focus on moving images. I’m assuming hospice is helping. They can be a wonderful resource. Please let me know that you received this message, Karen.

As a blog subscriber you already know the first secret ingredient is to Ditch the Spanx.

Dr. Andrew Weil and I were interviewed for an article  in Oprah magazine and we were each asked what best “one thing” someone could do for their health. We both answered, “Breathe correctly.” Our cultural heritage of whalebone corsets, girdles and now Spanx—not the mention the military posture—has created a nation of chest breathers. This pattern of breathing catapults us into “fight or flight” whether or not we are facing any particular problems or adversity. We can be perfectly content and happy but if we are breathing this way our body is surging with chemicals that hurt rather than heal. On the other hand, our world could be falling down around our ears and if we breathe in a healthy fashion (diaphragmatic breathing) we can protect our physiology.

      Autogencis

A second tip is to practice something called “autogenics” –you can download the audio for free on my website. It’s only 5-minutes but can totally smooth out your day and retrain body and mind to respond differently to stress. The audio also features a technology of sound called psychoacoustics. If you use a headset you will hear a different beat each ear and the brain will create a phantom beat, called a binaural beat and nudge your brain into a more relaxed state, one associated with healing and repair.

Pay Attention to the Words you Use

And of course, the third tip is to pay attention to the words you use when you speak to yourself and ask if it is a message you want to receive. “Is this helping me now”? is a question we can train ourselves to ask and if the answer is no then we have the power in that moment to choose a frame of reference that is in our best interest. This simple question can redirect obsessive worry, self-criticism and channel precious energy into creating a new narrative, one rich with meaning that supports your goals and desires. It's so simple that it's power is often overlooked--all it takes is practice.
