Optimal Immunity Program

This [program] in and of itself, is a prescription for maximizing one’s health.”
–Anne Webster, PhD, Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine, Harvard Medical School

“…a superb and empowering series of strategies for those undergoing a journey through cancer.”
–Andrew Salner, MD FACR, Director, Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center, Hartford Hospital

“Participating in Brenda Stockdale’s six week session has been, for me, one of the most serendipitous experiences ever. She teaches, inspires and has us practice techniques that incorporate PNI concepts that work. Maureen and I really appreciate the opportunity this has given us to learn and put into practice more steps toward healing and wellness… This is a “shining point of light” in our community.”– JH

Warning Signs

Check to see if you have any of these “early warning signs” that indicate stress might be endangering your health:  Cold hands and feet; Hair loss; Headaches or migraines; Heart-burn; Muscle aches and pains; Insomnia; Lack of “restful” sleep; Reduced sex drive; Allergies; Skin problems; Constant flu and colds; Irritability; Fatigue. (Read on for an interview with the author.)

The Genie in Your Genes

Until recently scientists believed that our DNA was etched in stone. But we now know that everything in our environment—the way we think, how we feel, our exposure to toxins and how we cope with stress—affects the way our DNA is expressed, turning genes on or off, so-to-speak. This new understanding is changing not only the way we treat disease but how we empower patients.

Discover the power of the mind to heal

Lifesaving skills, techniques and behaviors can influence body processes once thought to be beyond our control. These methods can restore the brain and improve immunity–as well as cardiac function–while boosting peace of mind and alleviate anxiety and depression. As a result, many of these techniques are being taught in advanced health care centers as a primary means of preventive medicine. As a testament to the effectiveness of these techniques, some insurers offer discounts to those trained in their use. So that you can quickly and easily take advantage of the latest thinking in health care, these methods have been combined and condensed into a practical six-week program.

6-Week Mind-Body Medical Program

In our program strategies from leaders in multiple disciplines enhance your healing potential with up-to-the minute information about a rapidly building body of discoveries. The result is a toolbox of practical and essential information for a lifelong program of how to stay strong. In just 6-weeks you will discover—

* How to turn stress into strength. You’ll learn how stress affects your health and more importantly, how to reduce harmful levels on demand.
* How to boost immunity. Explore self-care techniques that help you maximize your immunity, regain a sense of control, energy and well-being.
* Surprising risk factors—greater than smoking, diet or cholesterol—and what to do about them.
* Why DNA is not your destiny. Your genetic inheritance isn’t as fixed as you might imagine!
* Help prevent reoccurrence, and most importantly, enjoy a happier, more vital life.

At RC Cancer Centers we recommend this educational series to all our patients and their families as an important component of the road to recovery and to even higher levels of wellness. The program–featuring Get Started Now exercises, stories of how individuals put the research into play, a Resource Guide and over 300 references—can be found in “You Can Beat the Odds: Surprising Factors Behind Chronic Illness & Cancer” [Sentient Publications, 2009 ]. If you or someone you love has been touched by illness this 6-week program in mind-body medicine can enrich your life and leave you feeling empowered for whatever the future may bring.

    Hi Brenda,

I have recently had a mastectomy & am now undergoing TCH chemo for early stage HER2+ breast cancer. I am an otherwise healthy 70 year old who wishes to take charge of my personal environment & promote my own healing/wellness.

I am reading your book and wondering if there are any of your 6-week mind/body programs/retreats, or ones patterned on it, anywhere nearer to me than Georgia? I live in Blacksburg, Virginia — home of Virginia Tech University — in the mountains of the southwestern Virginia area…50 miles west of Roanoke, VA. I also have family in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and both Berkeley & Palo Alto, California, so those would also be options for locations.

Would you please send me information on your Georgia program, as well as any on other programs/retreats you would recommend.

    Thanks so much,
    Suzy Moses

    Hi Suzy,

Thanks so much for your message, Suzy. You sound like a dynamic individual–an ideal candidate for the program! Currently the six-week program is offered here locally but I am traveling for seminars, etc.

The good news is that integrative physicians and oncologists in other states are interested in the approach and it is our hope that more centers will offer similar programs for prevention and as an adjunct to treatment. We do need more of these programs, don’t we?! Some support groups are using the book as a guide and going through the 6-weeks as a group together. Your local medical center may be open to doing something like that.

Twice a year in Virginia Lawrence LeShan (a personal hero of mine featured in chapter 2 of the book) hosts 5-day workshops on his method. His info is in the resource guide in the back of the book. He is amazing. Another possible option is visiting a colleague of mine, Dr. Kathleen Brehony, in Manteo, NC which shouldn’t be too far from your family. She is an incredible clinical psychologist and well-respected author who edited every page of my manuscript for the book–so she’s quite familiar with the topic and research presented. (I’m also available for consultation by phone and Skype if that appeals.) In California, I would recommend Commonweal — Rachel Naomi Remen, MD’s programs.

Please send feedback of any of the programs you try as it helps us with recommendations for others.

Wishing you all the best in your healing journey,

    Brenda.

Brenda, I’m still doing well after recovering from Lyme disease more than a year ago. The immune system enhancing techniques you describe in your book helped me get well and stay that way. I still use your book as a handy resource.

I’ve told my recovery story in a video that’s posted on YouTube. Perhaps others will find hope and a path to wellness by learning about my journey.

Carolyn, this is beautiful! I would love for readers to know a bit more about how truly remarkable this recover is and some of what you have been able to accomplish. Would that be okay with you? Maybe I could blog a bit about it? Would you be comfortable with that? Many thanks for sharing, Brenda.

As a blog subscriber you already know the first secret ingredient is to Ditch the Spanx.

Dr. Andrew Weil and I were interviewed for an article  in Oprah magazine and we were each asked what best “one thing” someone could do for their health. We both answered, “Breathe correctly.” Our cultural heritage of whalebone corsets, girdles and now Spanx—not the mention the military posture—has created a nation of chest breathers. This pattern of breathing catapults us into “fight or flight” whether or not we are facing any particular problems or adversity. We can be perfectly content and happy but if we are breathing this way our body is surging with chemicals that hurt rather than heal. On the other hand, our world could be falling down around our ears and if we breathe in a healthy fashion (diaphragmatic breathing) we can protect our physiology.

      Autogencis

A second tip is to practice something called “autogenics” –you can download the audio for free on my website. It’s only 5-minutes but can totally smooth out your day and retrain body and mind to respond differently to stress. The audio also features a technology of sound called psychoacoustics. If you use a headset you will hear a different beat each ear and the brain will create a phantom beat, called a binaural beat and nudge your brain into a more relaxed state, one associated with healing and repair.

Pay Attention to the Words you Use

And of course, the third tip is to pay attention to the words you use when you speak to yourself and ask if it is a message you want to receive. “Is this helping me now”? is a question we can train ourselves to ask and if the answer is no then we have the power in that moment to choose a frame of reference that is in our best interest. This simple question can redirect obsessive worry, self-criticism and channel precious energy into creating a new narrative, one rich with meaning that supports your goals and desires. It's so simple that it's power is often overlooked--all it takes is practice.
